"The trial has been adjourned until January 6," said majan.net owner Mohammed Rashid al-Shehhi, who has already faced three other defamation suits for articles posted on the site.

In November an appeal court quashed two prison sentences totalling 17 months against him after the officials who sued him dropped their complaints.

In a third ruling, a court ordered the closure of the website and imposed a one-year suspended jail term on Shehhi.

Emirati Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum decreed in September that journalists should not be jailed over their work. It is not known if the order applies to electronic sites.
