Shaikh Khalifa said the UAE is cooperating with the UN organisations to attain stability, prosperity and welfare to all countries and peoples of the world.
The President made his remarks as he received on Sunday, at Al Bateen Palace, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, who is on a two-day trip to the UAE as part of a 10-day visit to all six GCC member states.
Shaikh Khalifa and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights discussed the role of the Commission in boosting international cooperation for creating more transparent and fair environments within communities that drive and stimulate economic progress to countries and peoples and more social stability to individuals and families.
The UN official said she was impressed with the overall development and progress the UAE is witnessing at present. She lauded the progress the UAE has made in the labour legislations in regard to provision and protection of basic rights to workers in areas of proper accommodation, and timely payment of salaries through the electronic Wages Protection System.
The UN official said women in the UAE have gained their substantial rights through their engagement in the national action and their contribution to the nation-building. She said that she highly appreciates the standing the UAE women, in particular, women are now occupying four ministerial portfolios and there are nine members in the Federal National Council.
According to her, women’s presence in universities and government and private employment sector is much higher than their peer male. These indicators, she added, provide a strong evidence that women are widely enjoying their rights and are participating along with men in the development and prosperity of their country.
She said her whirlwind tour is seeking to gain a first-hand understanding of the current rapid dynamics in the GCC countries, including the UAE, in relation to legal and legislative developments aimed at striking balance within the GCC communities in harmony with international laws.
A number of Shaikhs, ministers and senior officials attended the meeting.
