“The UAE presidency of PUIC will contribute directly to deliver the aspired goals through joint action with all countries of the world out of the UAE leadership’s wise policy advocating peace and cooperation among humanity,” he said.

Al Ghurair told Khaleej Times that the PUIC would strive to implement resolutions issued at its meeting held in Kampala in January.

He was named as chairman of the 13th session of the PUIC at the
meeting.

He took over from Dr Ali Larijani, Speaker of Iran’s Islamic Consultative Assembly and the current PUIC chairman who represents the Asian Group at PUIC. PUIC was established in Teheran by the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) in June 1999.

Al Ghurair said that at the Kampala meeting, the UAE submitted a series of proposals including creation of a permanent committee on the occupied Jerusalem and amendment of the statute of the PUIC.
He said the PUIC executive committee will meet in the UAE next October to discuss proposals by member states on reforms of the statute and arrangements for convening its 13th session on January 16-17, 2011. The meeting will also address the UN to obtain an observer status, he said.

Meanwhile, Al Ghurair chaired the first coordination meeting of the PUIC in Bangkok on Sunday.
Al Ghurair said before leaving for Thailand that the meeting will discuss Israel’s violations against the Islamic and Christian shrines in Jerusalem, and Occupied Golan Height.

Other issues include human trafficking, organised crime, arm sales, trans-boundary terrorism and drugs.
The meeting, Wam reported from Bangkok, assured the importance of coordination between member states of union and uniting efforts to show solidarity among Muslim countries.

Al Ghurair pointed out that the idea of transforming the union into an international organisation is not feasible for the Arab region and the Islamic countries, and that the member states at the PUIC should move with the Arab group in one direction to prevent this from happening through participating in decision-making to preserve interests of Islamic countries, its sovereignty and laws.
