The praise came in a letter received by Shaikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs, from Peter Sutherland, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General on International Migration and Development.
“I would like to express my appreciation for the role UAE delegation played in Global Forum on Migration and Development. It is very important for the UAE to have such a successful and active participation during this special stage, when governments are uniting their efforts to raise the level of dialogue on migration issues and their impact on development,” the letter said.
Sutherland assured that the UAE’s participation in the Global Forum on Migration and Development that began its work in Athens on Thursday would be beneficial to both exporting and importing countries for employment as well as migrants themselves.
In Athens, UAE Minister of Labour Saqr Ghobash Saeed Ghobash met with Sutherland on Thursday and thanked him for the message.
Meeting on the sidelines of the Global Forum on Migration and Development, the two reviewed aspects of cooperation between the UAE Ministry of Labour and the Office of Immigration and Development of the UN.
Sutherland confirmed the importance of the UAE’s efforts to improve labour conditions. “What the UAE is doing to improve living conditions for expatriate workers is impressive,” he said. Once again, he expressed the hope that the UAE’s efforts and achievements in this field will become a model for countries in the region and others.
Ghobash presented Sutherland a Memorial Shield representing UAE national identity. The UN official expressed the hope to visit the UAE to get acquainted with the achievements of the country in various fields.
