"The Saudis have shown that they have an effective rehabilitation program that theyve been executing," said Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell at a press briefing.
"We have been exploring the possibility of having some of these detainees released into that program and transferred from Gitmo and placed into that program," Morrell confirmed.
He told reporters that talks between the US, Saudi Arabia and Yemen have been for sometime to figure out a way to move 100 or so mostly Yemeni detainees out of the military prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba while ensuring they "dont return to a life of terror." The Obama administration has pledged to close the infamous prison by early 2010, and release or bring to trial the remaining suspected terrorists detained there. Congress has sought to block any Guantanamo detainees being resettled in the United States.
