The incident occurred on Tuesday when a car bomb explosion targeted the minsiter’s convoy outside the government headquarters in the capital, AFP reported.
Ahmed was not hurt in the attack but at least seven of his bodyguards were killed in the blast that took place near their car.
The attack came after the death of al-Qaeda leader Said al-Shehri in an attack in eastern Yemen last week.
The Yemeni government has placed its security services on high alert to prevent "terrorist" attacks following a wave of incidents across the country.
In May, a bombing in Sana’a killed about 120 people, mainly soldiers.
