GCC secretary general Abdulrahman Al-Attiyah, in a statement, noted the leading role of Qatari Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, rotating president of the GCC, in clearing the skies between Lebanon and Syria.
This role, he added, paved the way for the announcement of the exchange of diplomatic ties.
The announcement was made on sidelines of a summit meeting in Paris, France, which brought leaders of the European Union (EU) and their Mediterranean partners. The summit also hosted Lebanese and Syrian leaders.
Al-Attiyah said the Qatari achievement reflected the GCC positive role vis-a-vis Arab and Islamic issues.
