Kuwaiti minister under fire over remark about tribes

Ali Al Deqbasi, a member of the opposition Popular Action Bloc, accused the minister of failing to apply the law to stop the “abusive” programme which “threatened national unity” in the oil-rich Gulf state.

The opposition claims the show, aired in December by private satellite channel Al-Soor, accused a majority of tribes of not being true Kuwaiti citizens because they carry dual citizenship, which is banned under Kuwaiti law.

Kuwaiti tribesmen form half of the country’s native population of 1.1 million, and the programme triggered widespread protests by tribesmen and activists, including at least two huge public rallies. The minister ordered the channel to close and its owner Mohammad Al Juwaihel, who presented the programme, was later briefly detained and is facing trial.

But the opposition still accused the minister of not applying the law to prevent broadcasts that risk national unity.

“The aim of the grilling is to activate the application of the law and prevent any abuse of national unity,” Deqbasi told reporters after he filed the request to parliament.
