Prominent Iraqi journalist Ahmed Hassan has survived an assassination attempt in Diwaniyah but will remain in intensive care for at least two weeks, a Baghdad hospital said.

Unknown gunmen shot Hassan, who works as a reporter for the Iraqi TV channel Al-Furat, several times as he arrived home near Diwaniyah at around 1:00 am local time yesterday (Sunday 22:00GMT).

Hospital spokesman Mohammed Mouyed said Ahmed Hassan has undergone brain surgery and was transferred to intensive care “where he will be kept under constant surveillance for a critical period of two weeks”.

The assassination attempt on Hassan’s life came 24 hours after the assassination of prominent civilian activist, Ihab Al-Wazni, in the city of Karbala. Al-Wazni was one of the most prominent activists calling for an end to Iran’s influence in the country.
