Ali bin Semaikh Al Marri was among the seven members chosen for the Arab League’s Human Rights Committee through secret ballot.
He bagged 14 of the 18 votes polled. Kuwait and Bahrain are the two other GCC countries which succeeded in pushing through their representatives on the Committee.
Describing it as an important milestone for Qatar, Al Marri said his entry into the Arab League’s human rights panel was made possible by the fact that Qatar had taken effective steps to protect human rights. The country’s constitution guarantees protection of human rights, he said.
