A national inspection campaign will be launched by the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) and other government agencies to search for groups that promote expatriates to ditch their sponsors and work illegally in Bahrain.

Vice-Chairman of the LMRA Ali Radhi said that companies hiring illegal workers would face penalties. “Before launching the campaign, letters have been sent to all companies urging them to update their lists of foreign workers.”

Radhi said the campaign would not spare any of the violators who would be referred to the Public persecution and then to the court.

Owners of companies hiring illegal workers could face imprisonment and a fine of BD2,000 if convicted. Tougher punishments would be imposed on repeating the offence or recruiting big number of runaway expatriates.
