This study covers legal, legislative, economic and environmental aspects of any future nuclear programs between the GCC member states, GCC assistant secretary general for humanitarian and environment affairs Dr. Abdullah Al-Hashem addressed the meeting.
Al-Hashem, speaking on behalf of the secretary general Abdulraham Al-Attiyah, said the experts would be discussing the nuclear and radioactive safety, personnel to be working in the nuclear program, as well as scientific research.
The experts will determine the path towards the use of nuclear technology which would be used for development in the GCC states, said Al-Hashem who noted that power-generation and water desalination were top needs.
The experts will discuss how to ultimately use the nuclear energy as a second source in addition to oil and gas thus diversifying energy resources, he said.
Secretary general of the Qatari supreme council for environment and natural reserves Khaled Al-Ali, addressing the meeting, said last December’s GCC summit in Doha, Qatar, approved the peaceful nuclear project so the team of experts have a great responsibility on their shoulders.
He said today’s meeting was the cornor stone of a "vital and strategic" project of the GCC states.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have already concluded the feasilibty of the Gulf nuclear project for power-generation and water desalination, two key tools for development, said Al-Ali.
Experts from the ministries of foreign affairs, interior, energy, defense, health, water and electricity and health will be discussing the development of the industrial infrastructure in the GCC states to honor IAEA requirements for the establishment of a nuclear program.
The GCC is made up of Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Oman.
