Arabs, S America call on Iran to respond positively to UAE islands issue

A final declaration of the two-day meeting of the Arab-South American Foreign Ministers, expected to be made out at the conclusion of the meetings later in the day, said dialogue and direct negotiations within the UN charter remained the only tool to bring a peaceful settlement to the dispute over the islands of greater and smaller tombs and Abu Moussa.

They call upon the Islamic Republic of Iran for a positive response to the United Arab Emirates initiative to reach a peaceful settlement in the issue involving the three UAE islands through dialogue and direct negotiations in accordance with the UN charter and international law, said the Buenos Aires declaration, a copy of which was made available to KUNA.

On the nuclear issue, the foreign Ministers, without making any mention of Iran or Israel, said regional security and stability required that the whole region be free of nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction.

Iran is under sharp criticism by the United and the West over its nuclear program, accusing Tehran of attempt to acquire nuclear weapons. Iran denied the charges, saying its program was for peaceful purposes.

They call upon all parties concerned as well as the international community to take practical and urgent measures for the establishment of a nuclear-weapon free zone in the Middle East,it said.

The ministers stressed on the necessity that all nuclear programs in any country without exception be placed under the safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
