Announcing Bahrain’s victory Foreign Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Khalifa said that the country got 142 out of the 191 votes cast by the UN member states.
Shaikh Khalid said Bahrain’s pro-human rights policies and its support to public freedom have enabled it to win a special place on the world map and earn the international community’s support to become a UNHRC member for the second time in a row.
He lauded the dedicated efforts in support of Bahrain’s nomination from government and non-governmental bodies, and called for more such cooperation to enable the kingdom to achieve further accomplishments.
Ambassador at the Foreign Ministry Mohammed Al Fihani told Bahrain News Agency that the kingdom won most of its votes from Asian countries after Japan which secured 155 votes, noting that the achievement was an international recognition of Bahrain’s outstanding human rights record.
All political societies have welcomed the win and hoped for more human rights privileges for people in Bahrain.
Opposition society Al Wefaq in a statement said it was a move in the right direction and urged the government to show further reinforcement of human rights principles by freeing all detainees held over the charges of sabotage, arson and policeman’s killing. These detainees are presently being tried at criminal courts.
