State lawyers for poor under study: Saudi Minister

Several cases have recently come to light where some accused persons have complained that they do not have recourse to justice as they were unable to pay lawyers to defend them.

The minister said the government was studying the merits and demerits of allowing Saudi women graduates to practice the profession.

Meanwhile, offices have been set up for judges at various Saudi prisons, Dr. Ali Al-Harethi, Director General of Prisons, said on Tuesday.

He said another goal is to transform prisons into mini-cities equipped with all amenities and services, including health and education.

Furthermore, some 34 new reform centers will be established over the coming years, Al-Sharq Al-Awsat said.

Al-Harethi said his department has expanded classification of inmates according to age, the type of crime and the length of sentence.

“These classifications require more space and that is why the Directorate of Prisons is working on building reform centers on a large scale,” he said.
