Speaking to KUNA and Kuwait Television following the meeting of the Kuwaiti and British leaders Thursday evening, he said, "The meeting is very important because it comes just days ahead of the G20 meeting in Washington, which will discuss the current global economic situation." He said the British premier briefed His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah on ideas that Britain proposed to save the global economy from collapse, adding that Britain was the only country that had put forth a specific plan out of this crisis.
The British proposal comprises the establishment of a fund to achieve complete global economic stability, he noted.
Moreover, Sheikh Mohammad underscored the experience of Brown in this field and the "important and influential" measures he had taken since the beginning of the economic crisis in his country.
These measures taken by Brown were then implemented by financer ministries and central banks in the US and other countries of the world, he said.
Furthermore, he said His Highness Sheikh Sabah and the British premier discussed the Millennium Development Fund, adding that Brown expressed his appreciation for Kuwait’s contribution to this fund, which aimed to assist those in need, especially in the field of education in African countries.
According to Sheikh Mohammad, the two sides also discussed the situations in Iraq, Iran and the region as a whole, as well as the Middle East peace process "and the important role that Britain plays in this area, especially as former British Prime Minister Tony Blair is currently the representative of the Quartet." Brown expressed his wish to visit Kuwait before the end of the year, and His Highness Sheikh Sabah welcomed this, he added.
In another statement to KUNA and Kuwait Television following a meeting between His Highness the Amir and former US President Bill Clinton, Sheikh Mohammad described Clinton as "a close friend of Kuwait." He recounted Clinton’s "honorable" supportive stances for Kuwait during the eight years that he was in office, especially in facing Iraqi threats, noting that he was also keen for arriving at a just solution for the Palestinian crisis and remained so.
Sheikh Mohammad said that Clinton reiterated during the meeting his interest in the Palestinian cause and the two sides discussed the views and policies of the new US Administration.
Clinton will be in Kuwait on Sunday to lecture at an economic seminar hosted by the National Bank of Kuwait.
