The brutal death on 2nd October of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at a diplomatic mission in Istanbul has awakened the public to some of the unpleasant realities of the modern world. Away from the details of the case, there is a pressing need for a fresh look at the developing real politique that is inflicting the world of diplomacy and international relations. Will this gruesome tale push the “free world” to a more humanistic approach to state-to-state relations? Issues of war and peace? Advancement of democratic and human rights reforms in countries ruled by “our allies”? Why has the notion of modern statehood in a world that become increasingly devoid of morality, religious guidance or logical political behaviour? Has the world become a more dangerous place for the human species given the burgeoning of the petro-dollar influence at times of fiscal crisis?
