The number of such cases in countries fighting human trafficking stands between 20 and 40 a year. This again shows the UAE’s commitment to putting an end to trafficking in persons. The National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking would release its annual report by the middle of this month. According to the minister, the report will highlight efforts and achievements made by the UAE over the last year. The UAE has been widely praised internationally for these successes. Human trafficking is a trans-national crime facing about 100 countries around the world. “The UAE has played an active role in fighting the crime. It has set up this committee and issued Federal Law No. 51 of 2000 on combating human trafficking, to become the first country in the region to do so,” Dr Gargash said. The amendments made to the UAE labour legislation have improved the country’s records in curbing human trafficking. “We are in the final stages of drafting the domestic helpers’ bill in coordination with the Ministry of Interior. This will significantly polish our image. The action taken on camel jockeys has created a positive image highlighting our success in fighting trafficking in persons,” he added.
