Oman court hands out stiff terms to Sohar protesters

The Misdemeanour Court of First Instance in Muscat imprisoned them for five years, while eight others will spend between three and six months in jail. Twelve of the 27 defendants were acquitted. The five-year jail term was awarded to Khamis Al Ajmi, Hilal Al Alawi, Khaled Sheedi, Majid Ma’amari, Salem Ma’amari, Khalid Al Balushi and Hilal Shezawi. They were found guilty of forcibly stopping work at government offices and damaging property.

Three other accused ˆ Khalid al Handooli, Ali al Badi and Ali al Gaithi ˆ received a six-month jail term and were ordered to pay a fine of RO100 each for assaulting government employees and blocking roads.

Hilal al Alawi, Haitham al Gaithi, Abdullah Al Badi and Abdulaziz Al Qasmi were sentenced to three months in jail and a fine of RO100 on the same charges. A four-month imprisonment was awarded to Amar Al Hinai, who will also pay a fine of RO100
