Speaking at a joint press conference with Secretary-General of the Arab League Nabil Al-Arabi following the just-concluded 137th session of the Arab League Ministerial Council, the Kuwaiti minister, who is chairman of the session, urged concerted efforts to avoid a more volatile situation in Syria, warning that relevant consequences would affect not only Syria but the entire region as well.
He said the meeting came amid very critical circumstances, mainly the aggravating humanitarian situation in Syria, adding that the Syrian situation was deeply discussed during the meeting.
The Arab foreign ministers called for stopping all forms of violence, protecting Syrian civilians, ensuring the freedom of peaceful protests, releasing all prisoners, ending the presence of troops in cities and villages, he said.
They also urged the Syrian government to allow in Arab and international humanitarian organizations in order to deliver aid to the Syrian people, he noted.
He added that the Palestinian issue was also mainly considered during the Arab gathering due to its paramount significance to the whole of the Arab world.
Several resolutions bearing on support and solidarity with Lebanon, Somalia, Comoros and Sudan were made, stressed the head of the 137th session of the Arab League Ministerial Council.
The ministers adopted a set of draft resolutions aiming to beef up Arab relations with regional and international blocs, he pointed out.
On a meeting between Arab foreign ministers and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov earlier in the day, he said both sides had agreed to an immediate halt of violence by anyone, a neutral control mechanism, non-foreign intervention in the Syrian issue, unrestricted access of humanitarian aid to all Syrians and support to UN-Arab Envoy on Syria Kofi Annan’s mission for political dialogue between the Syrian government and opposition forces.
The Arab foreign ministers urged immediate halt to the blood shedding in Syria, asking the regime to give foreign media and humanitarian workers access to the country Kuwait’s Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Minister and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Hamad Al-Sabah said Saturday.In a joint press conference with Arab League Secretary General Nabil Al-Araby following the conclusion of the 137th session of the Arab League Ministerial Council, Sheich Sabah – chairman of the session – called on Syrian government to fulfill its commitments as per the Arab plan to protect civilians.
He added that the foreign ministers demanded the Syrian regime to allow Arab and non-Arab media to enter and work freely in Syria.
They also urged the government to give humanitarian workers access to the hotspots across the Arab nation.
Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid added that the Arab foreign ministers will also ask the United Nations Security Council to shoulder its responsibility towards international peace and security and issue a resolution to force all parties in Syria to stop violence.
The Arab ministers welcomed the UN-Arab Special Envoy to Syria Kofi Annan and called on the Syrian regime and opposition to help prove his mission, to find a peaceful solution to crisis, successful, the Kuwaiti FM pointed out.
Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid added that the conferees called for launching a serious Syrian national dialogue based on the initiative approved by the Arab League on January 22 and by the United Nations General Assembly on February 12.
The ministers asked the Syrian opposition to unite and unveil its vision for the resolving the crisis in a way that meets the aspirations of the Syrian people.
The Kuwaiti top diplomat said that the Council welcomed the outcome of the "Friends of Syria" conference which Tunisia hosted on February 24, adding that the Arab ministers are looking forward for its coming meeting which will be held in Turkey.
