Saudi activist, Hala Al Dosari, has threatened to take a legal action against Kuwaiti MPs who were involved in the banning of the conference.
On her twitter, Hala posted a statement saying that, “I reserve my legal right, along with the respected organisers, to sue any figure who contributed in spreading lies and rumours, whether on purpose to achieve other goals such as assassinating the freedom of gatherings and expressions …. Or to unfairly hurt or follow rumours without checking facts against certain personalities such as Shaikh Salman Al Odah, or from the organisers or from me personally.”
The Saudi cleric Al Odah is described as the man behind Al Nahda (Awakening) Youth Forum, which is organised by Saudis, but held outside the country.
Bahrain hosted the first meeting in April 2010, and Qatar hosted the second the next April. Hala was invited to speak at the third conference in Kuwait.
Some Islamist MPs complained that the forum had a suspicious agenda.
The Kuwaiti interior ministry has banned the conference.
Some opponents, including the Kuwaiti parliament, harshly criticised Hala for participating in a television programme on a Christian Channel.
While she defended her interview with Al Hayat TV channel to discuss women’s status, she described what she was quoted as saying about holy books as “purely nonsense” coming from a “person who is used to tarnishing the reputation of people”.
Hala finally delivered her speech via Skype after liberal Kuwaiti groups hosted the meeting at a different venue, and without the participation of many Saudi figures, some reports said.
