Qatar, Algeria sign eight accords

The Emir and Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika witnessed the signing of an agreement on the establishment of an Algerian-Qatari partnership in the field of iron and steel in Balara area, at the Presidential Palace in the Algerian capital.

A number of other agreements were signed between the two countries including an agreement on commercial maritime transport and ports and another for the establishment of a centre for bustards breeding in El Bayadh state.

An agreement was signed for cooperation in the field of oil and gas, as well as an agreement for cooperation in the field of mining between Manal Complex and Qatar Mining Company. Separately, Qatar Petroleum and Algerian energy giant Sonatrach inked an accord for cooperation on fuel and petrochemcials.

The signing ceremony was attended by the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister H E Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem bin Jabor Al Thani. On the Algerian side, the signing ceremony was attended by Algerian Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal.

The planned steel complex will have a production capacity of 10 million tonnes per year. Official media did not specify the cost of the project. But daily El Moudjahid said the total estimated cost of the energy, mining and industry agreements during the Emir’s visit was around $ 5bn.
