Al-Attiya said in a press statement the announcement of President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan to develop peaceful nuclear energy facility was consistent with the policy of UAE "in support of its principled position to make the Middle East including the Gulf region free of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) particularly nuclear.

The UAE understands the unrivalled importance of safety with regard to the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and is committed to ensuring that the benefits of peaceful nuclear energy, whether within the areas of electricity generation, medicine, industry or agriculture, are only made available in a manner that does not compromise public safety or the environment, asserted Al-Attiya.

“Qatar has no information about what the newspaper has published and there are no secret or announced meetings concerning that matter,” Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy and Industry H E Abdullah bin Hamad Al Attiyah told reporters in Doha.

Fisk, however, reported that secret meetings had been held by finance ministers and central bank governors in Russia, China, Japan and Brazil to work on the scheme, which would result in oil no longer being priced in dollars.
