Oman joins IAEA, vows support for its role

In his speech before the IAEA’s 52nd general conference and to mark the Sultanate joining the agency, Sayyid Badr bin Hamad al Busaidy, Secretary-General of the Foreign Ministry and head of the Sultanate’s delegation to the conference, said Oman is looking forward to co-operate with the IAEA and its member states in scientific and knowledge spheres, particularly in power generation and water desalination in addition to utilisation of applications related to medicine, health, environment, water management and agriculture.

Sayyid Badr praised the distinguished role the IAEA chief Dr Mohamed ElBaradei played over the past years and reaffirmed the Sultanate’s support of his objective and dedicated efforts to upgrade the agency’s performance to serve international peace and security, wishing him and the IAEA staff every success. He expressed thanks for accepting the Sultanate as an IAEA member.

Sayyid Badr also met Dr ElBaradei and reviewed with him ways of bilateral co-operation in light of the Oman’s membership in the IAEA, unanimously endorsed during the current session here. The meeting was attended by Dr Badr bin Mohammed al Hinai, Oman’s Ambassador to Austria and its Permanent Representative at the UN Office in Vienna, and Ambassador Ali bin Salim al Maamari, Head of the Peaceful Nuclear Technology Office at the Foreign Ministry, and members of the delegation accompanying Sayyid Badr.
