Through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in labour development, Indian labour officials will become members in a joint committee with their Bahraini counterparts and will have the power to tackle maltreatment of Indian workers.

The MoU was signed by Bahrain’s Minister of Labour Dr Majid bin Mohsen Al Alwali and Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs, Shri Vayalar Ravi.

The MoU facilitates employment of workers between the two countries, responsibilities of the employers and workers, bilateral cooperation to facilitate the mobilisation and recruitment of manpower and exchange of expertise, knowledge and experience in job creation and generation of employment opportunity.

Member of Bahraini Civil Partnership to Fight Human Trafficking, Faisal Fulad welcomed the agreement that would tackle abuse and ill-treatment against the Indian workforce that represents more than a quarter of Bahrain’s manpower.

“The idea of the agreement that is also expected to be signed soon between India and UAE and Oman come as a result of Al Alawi’s visit to India in September 2007,” Fulad told Khaleej Times.

The Indian officials would also have the power to deal with strikes, disputes and labour crises.
