The city is located within the limits of Al Hidd industrial area and can accommodate 4,000 labourers at present.

Muharraq Municipal Council Chairman Mohammed Jassim Hamada told Khaleej Times on Sunday that a database of labourers is being created to facilitate their movement from residential areas.

Construction of 13 five and four-storey buildings is almost complete under the first phase while 12 more buildings would be built in the next phase.

“The Labour City would not be just for labourers of Muharraq, rather it would be open for labourers from all over Bahrain, while similar projects would be established in other towns,” Mohammed explained.

He hoped that the shifting would eliminate many problems like unhygienic conditions and fire incidents as many labourers live in overcrowded residential areas. “Luckily most of the fire incidents that took place in the past two years occurred in the afternoon when most of the labourers were away at work and those who were inside were evacuated safely.”

Mohammed said that most of houses turned into labour accommodation lacked proper safety measures. “The problem is big as a huge number of labourers are lodged in small and old houses without any proper kitchen facility,” he remarked.
