GCC eyes UN observer status

GCC Secretary-General Abdulrahman Al Attiya expressed the desire in a meeting with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon on the fringes of the Arab Summit.

Moon welcomed the GCC wish, Attiya said in statements to Kuwait TV and KUNA, adding that Moon had commended the “active and effective GCC presence at the regional and international political arena.

Al Attiya said the 19th was a typical move and push forward for joint Arab action. Moon said the Arab summit was held in a “very crucially important” period and the Arab leaders were determined to resolve regional issues.

He said the summit had great achievements because the leaders had focused on how to facilitate the peace process in the Middle East.

“Arab leaders were determined to pursue Arab peace initiative to improve and facilitate peace process in the Middle East.” Moon said the summit was held in the “most appropriate timing” and the leaders were determined to exercise their leadership as well as time and energy to resolve all regional problems.

The UN chief said he was encouraged that many Arab leaders focused on the situations in Somalia and Sudanese region of Darfur. He said he was invited by Saudi King Abdullah for a meeting with Sudanese President Omar Bashir to discuss the Darfur problems.

He commended Saudi King Abdullah’s speech during the opening ceremony of the 19th Arab summit as “true expression of the reality of the Arab present state.”
