Hashemi, who arrived in Kuwait earlier yesterday for a three-day visit, thanked Kuwait for its support. US-ally Kuwait served as a launch pad for the US-led invasion of Iraq in March 2003 that toppled the former regime of the late Saddam Hussein. It continues to offer financial and humanitarian aid to the war-torn nation. Kuwait has also agreed in principle to significantly reduce some $ 16bn of debt owed by Baghdad but so far refuses to forgive dozens of billions of dollars in war reparations for Iraq’s 1990 invasion of the state.
