New thrust in Oman-Qatar ties

HH Sayyid Fahd also expressed the Sultanate’s appreciation for the progress and development witnessed by Qatar under the leadership of Shaikh Hamad bin Khalifa al Thani and for the remarkable progress at various levels to achieve welfare and prosperity for the Qatari people, wishing such efforts all success. Shaikh Hamad expressed his satisfaction over the level of bilateral relations in various spheres. He hoped that the future will witness further progress in relations to serve the interests of both countries and people.

The two sides reviewed bilateral co-operation in political, economic, social and educational fields, particularly in gas, and means to boost such cooperation and utilise expertise of both sides. They agreed to intensify the joint committee meetings, lay down a well-studied action plan, design programmes to promote bilateral co-operation and to tap all joint investment resources and prepare studies on them.

The two sides also reviewed regional and international developments of mutual concern. In statements to Oman News Agency and Oman TV, HH Sayyid Fahd pointed out the numerous fields of co-operation which will materialise soon. He affirmed that the Sultanate accords special attention to its relations with Qatar, which stem from the solid trust between them. He said, many issues have been discussed during the talks whose results will be felt in the near future. The two sides discussed strengthening and developing the economy in the two countries to achieve aspirations of the two brotherly people.

HH Sayyid Fahd said: “We possess all means and capabilities that promote these relations to serve the collective march of the GCC states because bilateral relations constitute the foundation for the collective relations. “We agreed on many issues with this brotherly country, both economic and scientific”. The educational city, which he visited yesterday, is a pride for the countries of the region, he added. HH Sayyid Fahd said that many Omani students are studying in these international universities here.

He said Shaikha Moza bint Nassir al Masnad, Chairperson of the City Board, supported by the Qatari Emir, supervises these universities and the educational city. HH Sayyid Fahd expressed his appreciation to the Emir, the Crown Prince, the foreign minister, Abdullah bin Hamad al Attiyah, Deputy Prime Minister, Energy and Industry Minister and Head of the Qatari side at the Omani- Qatari joint committee.

He also thanked all Qatari officials for their respect for the Sultanate’s status under the leadership of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos who has good brotherly relationship with the Qatari leadership and is keen to make bilateral relationship an exemplary one. The Qatari Foreign Minister said HH Sayyid Fahd’s visit to Qatar stands as evidence of the deep-rooted ties between the two brotherly people. He noted the attention accorded to this visit by the Emir and the Heir Apparent. He said the visit is a new addition to the bilateral relations and to the joint committee. He said during the session of talks, the two sides discussed co-operation in energy, particularly gas.

He affirmed that His Majesty Sultan Qaboos and Shaikh Hamad bin Khalifa al Thani represent the main pillar of these relations. He added that the relations between the two peoples are friendly and open. Therefore, such relations should be utilised for the future. He noted that HH Sayyid Fahd agreed with his viewpoints of formulating a general framework for such co-operation, which “we hope will be materialised within few months”.

The talks session was attended from the Omani side by Yusuf bin Alawi bin Abdallah, Minister Responsible for Foreign Affairs, Maqbool bin Ali Sultan, Minister of Commerce and Industry, Mohammed bin Ali al Alawi, Minister of Legal Affairs, Dr Mohammed bin Hamad al Rumhy, Minister of Oil and Gas, Hamad bin Mohammed al Rashdi, Minister of Information, and Rashid bin Mubarak al Gheilani, the Sultanate’s Ambassador to Qatar. A number of Qatari ministers also attended the meeting.
