Qatar, UN official discuss Darfur peace plan

A statement issued after the meeting said that the minister and the UN/AU Joint Chief Mediator on Darfur held talks in Doha to discuss means of pushing forward the peace process and to achieve a comprehensive and lasting peace in Darfur.

The two officials welcomed the initiatives taken in Libya to unify the armed movements in Darfur and also those being taken by US President’s Special Envoy to Sudan, General Scott Gration.

While recalling relevant provisions contained in the Tripoli Statement, Al Mahmoud and Bassole expressed hope that efforts aimed to unify the movements would contribute to coherence among the armed movements and enhance their capacities for a unified negotiatiating position, in addition to their preparedness to start talks with the Sudanese National Unity Government.
