Qatari cabinet reviews women’s panel recommendations

The committee, according to sources in the Central Municipal Council (CMC), had expressed some reservations with regard to the steps to be taken to eliminate all forms of discrimination against women.

The Cabinet yesterday reviewed the suggestions made by the Committee at its weekly meeting and issued a decision.“We have waiting quite eagerly to know the decision of the Cabinet,” said a CMC source who has been following up the issue of women’s discrimination since 2005 when all GCC states declare violence against women a punishable offense.

Women are occasionally victims of family and social violence but the problem, according to social activists, is that most of them choose to remain silent and do not report the matter to law enforcement agencies. “We, therefore, don’t have statistics,” the CMC source lamented.
