A high sense of responsibility and a scientific approach are needed to handle the multi-faceted issues related to the demographic structure of the country, Shaikh Saif told the members recently.

He asked them to preserve and promote the national identity and forward proposals and ideas in the next meeting so as to formulate applicable solutions.

He called on the members to find out a new mechanism that can contribute to achieving the goals of the Government Strategy to rectify the imbalance in the demographic structure.

The committee discussed a host of topics concerning demographic plans and strategies to protect the national interests, values and principles while formulating development plans in the next stage.

In July, His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, ordered the establishment of a ministerial committee to formulate a comprehensive population policy.

Dr Anwar Mohammed Gargash, Minister of State for Federal National Council Affairs, has been appointed Deputy Chairman of the Population Committee and its members include Minister of Economy Shaikha Lubna Al Qasimi, Minister of Labour Dr Ali bin Abdullah Al Ka’abi and representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as well as the National Security Council.

The committee will be responsible for drafting new policies and regulations to achieve the government’s strategic goals.

The need for a comprehensive population policy was highlighted in the UAE Government Strategy unveiled by Shaikh Mohammed in April.

According to the strategy, the policy must focus on striking a balance between the requirements of sustainable development and the national population.
