A high-level official at the ministry told KUNA that on October 16, Al-Badawi, a high-profile Al-Qaeda leader in Yemen, had voluntarily surrendered to security authorities.

The United States sharply criticized Yemen last Friday for reports that Yemeni authorities released Al-Badawi, who is wanted by the FBI for the bombing of the USS Cole.

Suicide bombers on a boat attacked the guided missile destroyer USS Cole on October 12, 2000, while at harbor in Aden. Seventeen US sailors were killed and 39 injured.

Al-Badawi was convicted in 2004 and sentenced to death, yet managed to escape prison in 2003, before his trial and was recaptured in 2004. In 2006, he escaped again with 22 others, and had been at large until his surrender earlier this month.
